Family pets, zoo animals taken to safety from Ukraine

At an animal shelter in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Natalia Horobets bid an emotional farewell to her beloved pet cat Charly this week.

Horobets and her husband had fled their home in the eastern city of Kramatorsk as Ukrainian troops fought Russian invaders.

But after a difficult journey west on a packed train, they finally decided to let their pet go, concluding that setting up a new life hundreds of miles from home would be hard enough without a hyperactive cat to care for.

"Our trip by train lasted for 40 hours," Natalia Horobets said in Lviv, which along with the rest of Ukraine's west has so far been largely untouched by the conflict. "There were many people and we were afraid that he would be trampled."

rather than leave him behind in a war zone. He would be snug in my cat sack strapped to my chest.

Hes my family and best friend.

He saved my life literally when I was slipping into an undiagnosed diabetic coma. He lets me know when my sugar levels are off, even before I know it.

He will not be left behind.
He would probably be hiding in his cat sack around all the chaos..

I cannot imagine my life without him in it.

Nobody can convince me to abandon him. He's the best friend I have.

Sekhmet watch over the lions and tigers, protect them, keep watch, and destroy any russian asshole who would kill them,or any other cat.

to feel you have to give up your companion cat or dog... I just can't imagine. I go into pure panic when the tornado siren sounds here in the Spring, making sure everyone is in the shelter before I go in. I can't even think about the Ukrainians and their pets; I'd never stop crying. Between them and the street animals... I didn't think I could hate anyone more than Trump, but Putin pushed me over the line with this. Damn them both and all autocrats to hell... and in a quick hurry, please. Let the world live with those of us who want to make it better for all creatures.
