'Buddy' the cat battling for his life, 2 Philadelphia juveniles in custody

Buddy the cat is hanging in there in the fight for his life after authorities say two young men in Philadelphia’s Frankford neighborhood encouraged their dogs to maul him earlier this week.

The disturbing scene was caught on surveillance footage with the young men, who appeared to be walking their dogs, stopping to free their dogs from their leash while encouraging them to go up onto a porch area where Buddy was standing and attack him. “Good boy!” one of the them can be heard telling one of the dogs before a man in the home came out and stopped the disturbing scene.

On Friday, the SPCA updated to its page that the two individuals — a 17-year-old and a 12-year-old – have surrendered to police and the dogs have been taken into custody by the SPCA. It said the two are facing felony animal fighting, felony aggravated animal cruelty and a conspiracy charges.

“Buddy is still hanging in there,” the Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals posted Thursday to its web page. Buddy is still listed in critical condition who is reportedly “suffering from wounds across his body,” but “does not appear to have any internal bleeding or broken bones.” Buddy was reportedly a stray who came to the house because the family there fed him. He is expected to find a new home should he recover.

Animal cruelty perpetrated by adolescents is a predictor of later human violence.

in this case. Like, let those kids get attacked by dogs to within an inch of their lives - see how they like how it feels.

Of course that's not how it works; and if it could work that way, I'd have to think more rationally about whether I'd really want that.

And one of the kids is only 12 - maybe his problem is just the bad influences in his life.

I wouldn't feel bad about the 17 yr old getting a taste of adult punishment though.

I don't have the info at hand but have read a number of times that serial killers often begin as having abused animals.

There are three childhood behaviors that some believe are signs a kid might be headed that way: cruelty to animals, starting fires, and bed wetting. Ths is called the Macdonald Triad, for the researcher who popularized the idea. There's some controversy regarding the accuracy of this theory, but it is a popular one.
