Dog Owners Warned Of Highly Contagious Virus Spreading Across South Florida

https://miami.cbslocal.com/2022/03/31/miami-dade-animal-services-warns-highly-contagious-virus-dogs/?amp

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade Animal Services is urging dog owners to keep a watch on their pets out in public as a new highly contagious disease spreads across South Florida.

It’s called Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC).

“Canine infectious respiratory disease complex is like a canine flu or canine cold. It’s multiple viruses that affect the respiratory tract and causes respiratory symptoms. Sneezing, coughing, and hacking,” said Dr. Maria Serrano, a veterinarian at Animal Services.

Animal Services said there have been many cases of CIRDC reported throughout South Florida. They urge dog owners to help protect their pets by keeping them current on routine vaccines and away from places with multiple dogs.

The link is from the AKC's Canine Health Foundation

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex
(CIRDC), sometimes referred to as ‘kennel cough’
or ‘canine cough,’ is a clinical syndrome. At least
nine different bacteria and viruses have been
linked as causes of CIRDC. Co-infections (i.e.
infection with more than one bacterial or viral
agent) are common.

is the most common vector for this. Puppies should be vaccinated at 16 weeks (or earlier per some vets) and dogs should be vaccinated every year thereafter.

When I told the vet that I didn't board my dog, I was asked if he ever went to a groomer. That was it, my dog gets the kennel cough vaccine along with whatever vaccines his vets recommend.

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) is very common
and can be due to one or more bacterial and viral organisms.
Signs of disease can be:
• Mild, e.g. cough, sneeze, discharge from the eyes or nose, fever
• Progressive, i.e. begin as mild signs that rapidly worsen
• Severe, such as pneumonia complicated with bacterial infection
In most dogs, signs of disease are mild and self-limiting (i.e. resolve on
their own) in 7-10 days.
Outbreaks can occur as disease spreads rapidly from dog-to-dog. This is
a particular concern for dogs in group settings (e.g. dog shows, boarding,
doggie daycare, dog parks), which have high dog-to-dog contact.
Vaccines that lessen disease severity and reduce organism shedding are
available for some of the infectious bacteria and viruses involved in CIRDC.

What is it?

Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex
(CIRDC), sometimes referred to as ‘kennel cough’
or ‘canine cough,’ is a clinical syndrome. At least
nine different bacteria and viruses have been
linked as causes of CIRDC. Co-infections (i.e.
infection with more than one bacterial or viral
agent) are common.
Common viral causes of CIRDC include canine
adenovirus 2, canine distemper virus, canine
influenza viruses, canine herpesvirus, and canine
parainfluenza virus (see Resources for links to
individual factsheets).
Common bacterial causes of CIRDC include
Bordetella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus equi
subspecies zooepidemicus, and Mycoplasma spp.
Veterinarians most commonly diagnose CIRDC
after a dog’s owner notes a sudden onset of
coughing, sneezing, or discharge from the nose
and/or eyes. Disease may be diagnosed after
multiple dogs have a sudden onset of these signs
shortly after being together in a common area

Which is in the same genus of bacteria that causes Pertussis (whooping cough) in humans.

So this appears to be different than the usual cause of kettle cough.

Kennel Cough was something that would spread across dog racing circuits. I knew a few people who worked with those dogs, kennel cough was one of the things that doesn't get said aloud, an elephant in the room. It spreads fast and would lock entire kennels down.
