Related: About this forumI just got home from a trip to Aldi, and saw the sweetest, most heartbreaking sight
Spooky was sitting in the front flower bed, amongst the Daffodils, staring up at Madoc who was sitting at the kitchen window.
For anyone who doesn't know, Spooky is Madoc's mom.
I think I'll put a treat out for her.

(14,529 posts)I always think of that line when I hear the name "Spooky" .
Is she a feral cat? Surely she doesn't know ..can she? Especially through a window..my cats seem to rely on scent to identify friends and foes. I thought cat vision was weird..
Maybe she is just wistful because Madoc and Gryff get so many treats. What will you put out for her?

(26,263 posts)I might give her a little bit of sardine. I know they shouldn't eat a lot of it, but an occasional taste should be fine.
And I don't know if she could actually recognize him. It was just so touching to see her gazing up and him gazing down.

(14,529 posts)So she is not at all friendly? Yeah ferals are a mix..some are friendly..some not so much..it all depends on how the humans they have interacted with have been..usually they are friendly though because most people like cats..even dog people.

(26,263 posts)I can get within about 3' of her before she edges away.
She's a part of my feral's that I feed. Skittish, Mittens the Kitten, Scooter and Spooky are daily visitors. Occasional Bruiser (the only Tom I've seen) stops by. Others that live on the north side of the neighborhood sometimes wander by. I have one trap, and another is on the way so we will put them out to 'normalize' them and then set them. Hopefully they trap ferals rather than skunks, opossums or raccoons!
I'll get them fixed and then release them back into the yard.

(14,529 posts)Yeah you would be doing a good deed indeed if you managed to fix them..it is far from easy to fix ferals. Again it depends on how friendly they are.
I have seen a small feral around that I should get fixed, but I was too preoccupied in the last year and with covid and everything..I should really do it..
I say I have 7 cats, but really technically only the 4 girls are pets..the 3 boys are ferals but very friendly ferals..well two of them...the third is a jaded/world weary old tom and quite standoffish! But he deigns to be fed!

(57,073 posts)Once my vet assured me that my senior rescue girl's odd behavior was due to ferals. He said, "I assure you she knows they are out there [coming to feed]."
She doesn't sit in windows, so smell would be the only other way.
