Related: About this forumClumping cat litter
There has been a lot of accidents around the three cat boxes in my garage.
So, I bought 3 new cat boxes (large size) with a rim going around the top so the litter can't be kicked up so easily. It also seems to prevent one of my cats from missing the box with his pee.
Chewy had a deal on unscented clumping cat litter. I had always used Tidy Cats unscented before as much a possible.
After using this new Fresh Step unscented clumping cat litter my life is SO MUCH EASIER.
The only thing I don't like it the cost!
I received 4 10.2 lb. bags for approx $25.00.
I was getting 80 lbs. delivered from Target for about 30.
It doesn't seem that the clumping cat litter goes very far.
Any tips folks?
Thanks so much!

(20,202 posts)and some need to be fully changed out more often than others. Anything that your cats will use rather than having "accidents" is worth it IMHO. Watch for sales and stock up when you can.

(20,876 posts)He's not sick. He's spoiled more than anything.
He is a hefty 9-year old tabby cat and 1/2 feral. I've never tried to put him in a cage and he has never been to a vet.
He has bitten me many times and I've needed antibiotics, etc. from the bites .
So, anything I can due to make this situation easier, the better.
Can you recommend a brand by any chance?
Thanks so much!

(21,487 posts)I don't like Tidy Cat. It doesn't clump well enough.
I've also found that a house brand at a local supermarket is inexpensive and works well. But it is a regional store chain in the US northeast.
Family Dollar's house brand is reasonable and works well.

(20,876 posts)Do you (or does anyone else here know), can you mix the clumping type of cat litter with the nonclumping type?
Please let me know.
Thanks.

I'm still well-stocked with a couple of hundred lbs. of it. Can you combine the two?
If clumping litter can sicken an cat, why is it recommend by veterinarians? (is it all about $$$ or what?)

(20,202 posts)Some cats are sensitive to it, others aren't. There are also clumping litters that are less dusty than others. The main thing is that most clumping litters do not recommend flushing the clumps like they once did.

(20,876 posts)The worst one I ever tried was WORLD'S BEST CAT LITTER.
Its made out of corn or something.
My poor late kitty REFUSED to use that litter/box and just hung around waiting in pain.
Luckily I figured it out quickly!

(20,876 posts)Chewy was very nice about it and refunded my money and I bought a load of Tidy Cats unscented nonclumping litter for the crew here plus another 3 boxes with the lip on them.
Its more work but my cats are worth it!
I'm glad I figured out why Andreas is so upset!
Between the death of my husband and the litter change, it is too much for him and it has not done me any good either.
Oh well.
Thanks for your info. btw. It made me realize that this is not a product that everyone can successfully use, my household being one of them.
Andreas is worth it!

(5,420 posts)We use Tidy Cats 4-in-1 Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter, 35-lb pail. It's the best clumping litter we have found. Clumps stay together better for disposal than the cheaper litter we had (I don't recall its name.)
Chewy is showing the 35-lb pail of Tidy Cats 4-in-1 Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter for $17.28.
Hope you find something that works well!

(20,876 posts)More litter and almost the same price.
What about this Arm & Hammer slide stuff? Ever heard of it:

(36,269 posts)We have one of those enclosed litter boxes that can be sifted by flipping it over. The litter seems to last longer than the nonclumping kind (cheap generic clay from Dollar General). It does have a slightly strange scent but the cats don't seem to mind -- all three use the same box, and an old-fashioned open box is also available. They use both, without any obvious pattern other than avoiding the most recently used one. And the odor is much reduced.
We went whole hog and bought the bag disposal system. I'm getting too old too keep carrying litter boxes out to the garage all the time, and it's been a big relief.

I've bought the Slide refills only when I've got a coupon or other price break, and I'm nowhere near running low.

(13,596 posts)less when you go in for refills. They have a huge tub full you go in and refill from.
I bought one of those covered cat boxes. That stopped most of the mess.

(7,754 posts)every day or so, it's easier and it last quite a long time before it gets nasty and has to be changed. Of course I only have one big Maine Coon and he actually prefers to be outside and only uses the box at night or when it's too cold and he stays in. Given his thick coat, he almost never wants to be inside. I also keep a bag full of old grocery bags in the bathroom so I can just grab one and clean the box. They don't take up much room and I don't have to go look for a bag when I notice he's using the box.

(20,876 posts)Being I have three cats I also have three litter boxes.
I clean all three out once a day (a.m.).
So far this is a lot better than having three boxes with no lip on them and finding feces and pee outside of the one that the oldest semi-feral cat uses.
Its a load every day but I can barely lift those 30 lb. bags of Tidy Cats nonclumping that I have plenty of in the garage. I have a box of plastic bags that I use for a few days and then dump.
The old boxes are outside right now and it is raining pretty hard right now. That should help to clean them up (at least a bit that is).
Thanks for your advice!

(20,876 posts)There has been a great deal of trauma around here.
It began right around the time I began to use the clumping cat litter.
My husband died.
Andreas was with him much of the time and he keep crying and scratching at almost anything.
It goes on until late in the night.
I've put him out in the garage just to get some sleep.
It just occurred to me that the clumping cat litter is making his paws hurt!
Could this be the case?
I've been diligent about cleaning the 3 large boxes out 2X a day to get rid of the clumps.
It is heavy!
If it is sticking to paws and the cat has an allergy to it, this may be why he is crying so much?
Lots of crying going on around here!
Any thoughts or ideas on this?
Please HELP if you can!
Thanks!
