Related: About this forumSo I'm watching the dogs dig a new best hole.
Maybe the third one of the day and they love to stick their heads in the new best hole and bark, it never gets old for them I might give it a shot I told my wife.

(15,154 posts)Too bad they never dig where you want them to.
Either they won't dig up the soil so it's easier for you to plant that new apple tree, or they dig up the soil after you put in your spring bulbs.

(2,863 posts)He lived to be about 15 years old and went over the rainbow bridge back in August of 2020. He loved digging holes. He always had about 3 of them going in the backyard. They were great for when he had to entertain 'feline dignitaries' as you can see below:

(2,863 posts)Samson came out of the shelter in Miami. We brought him with us up to Boston for a couple of years. He loved the snow! He was built for it. I always love your posts about your dogs. I would get another one, but we moved a couple of years ago and the new house that we rent doesn't have a fenced in yard. We still have cats, but all our dogs got old and passed away. Anyway, have a great day Duncanpup!

(16,521 posts)The image of the dogs digging and digging and then barking into the holes is pretty darned funny. But I wonder if they can actually hear and/or smell actual critters moving around down there and are reacting to them.
I don't recall where you live, but I think just about every ecosystem has animals that live in underground burrows. For example, I'm in the midwest, and we have 13-lined ground squirrels, moles, shrews, voles, pocket gophers, and loads of rabbits, just to name a few.
We all know that dogs can detect a lot of things humans are oblivious to. I think most of us have seen those videos of foxes nose diving into the snow to make a snack of some critter that they can hear scurrying around deep below. Like this one:
Dogs and foxes are VERY close relatives, after all. So when your dogs stick their head in a hole and bark, they might be reacting to animals under there that keep moving out of reach just a little too fast to get caught.
