Related: About this forumThe fur babies were in the den. I was in the laundry room.
I opened the cupboard, above the laundry tub, where I keep the treats and several other things. The INSTANT I put my hand on the treat sticks all four came racing into the room.
How the heck do they know!?!?!?!?

and sound asleep, but she somehow hears the first stroke of the comb or brush and comes running, trying to force me to brush her instead.
Their hearing & recognition of sounds are amazing.
Or else they are telepathic.

I think about getting a can out, and POOF! There they are.

(17,758 posts)The tuna we have has pull top lids. Of course other foods that come in cans, like beans, also have pull top lids.
We open the other type much more frequently than tuna, which is usually only at lunch.
They only react to the tuna. Never to the other foods.

(26,113 posts)I once unwrapped a tin-foil package of frozen turkey, and my tux cat came running (or at least her best approximation of running--she was somewhat crippled by arthritis at that time.) She was a little hard of hearing then, too, so it had to be smell or telepathy.

(7,700 posts)I've had cats do similar things & I went through each step of the process, slowly, pausing after each one, until I did one thing that made them come running, & it was one specific sound.
For example I had a cat that came running every time I opened a can of tuna. I could take the can out of the cupboard, put it on the counter, rattle it around... no reaction. But when I pulled on the tab to open it & the tab penetrated the lid & it made the "pfft" sound because the can was vacuum packed, instant cat running into the kitchen.
