Was on phone and the nice lady I was talking with heard Dunc the golden retriever barking.

She said oh my i hear your big dog barking what kind dog do you have. She told me her and daughter have a shepherded at home he’s very brave and protective over his people.

I smiled and said he’s a golden retriever who identifies as a guard dog who was defending me from serial killing mailman from the sofa looking out the window.

I’m not that confident in his protection capabilities i mentioned to her and said yesterday at the park as we were walking Dunc was afraid of a plastic bag being blown by the wind as in he stopped hid behind me barking at the bag.

My favorite pound hound Sammy parked herself right in front of me while my husband went to the Rest Area restroom. I was sitting well back from all the people walking to the restrooms. She did not move until he returned. Great guard dog. Looked like a Gordon setter. Best dog ever!

3. I get it, too. Alexander, Great Pyrenees, saves us from all

large trucks. He sees great danger in mail, Fed Ex, USP, and all landscaping trucks. Without Alex, my life would be eerily quiet 🤫 Too much quiet 🤫 would not be healthy or happy. Alex is worth every bark.

We had a Golden that would get on the road and cause a traffic jam. She would have gotten in the car with anyone. One day she was lying in the screened porch and the kitchen door was open. We lived in the country and we were home alone. A man pulled in the driveway and came to the door. He reached for the door handle and that dog let out the growl of all growls and began fierce nonstop barking. I didn’t know this guy and was expecting no one. He asked me…does she bite? I replied ‘ I wouldn’t feed her if she didn’t! He turned on his heels and left. I have no idea what that guy was up to and am forever thankful for that golden girl! Love to you!💗

5. i love dogs.

my 2 chihuahuas are fairly stereotypical. They bark at people walking their dogs 1/4 mile away, when someone's at the door, if they hear someone walking outside. One is reactive and fearful and scary, the other one just really wants to get to know you. Both are harmless.

6. I tend to prefer big dogs

Both German shepherds and retrievers have to be taught to be nasty. They'll bark but the only protection they generally offer is trying to lick an intruder to death.

Then again, I've been pals with junkyard and urban theater guard dogs, usually to the owner's consternation. Big dogs aren't averse to making noise, but they're generally not averse to making friends. You really have to work at it to turn one nasty.

I have one who hates snakes -- been bitten 3 times by copperheads. Had to rescue a piece of garden hose from him.

10. We all recognize his special snake bark now.

Have to rush and break it up. He doesn't care about the snake's pedigree, if it slithers he hates it. Only had to chop 1 copperhead since his last bite, but have had to rescue several non-venomous snakes from him.

16. My 9yo Havanese encountered a black snake passing through our yard 6 months ago...

...several weeks back he was going nuts in the back yard. Was definitely getting a root very nervous. But I felt much safer 🤪.

Used to have a golden retriever we made sure to take with us when picking wild blackberries. If she was nosing around, we knew there were no snakes in the area.

If a bird is taking a bath in his water bowl on the porch, he hides a room away behind the dining room table and stretches his neck to watch the bird.
