On this day, March 31, 1968, Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not be running for another term.

I watched on my family’s one and only TV, which was black and white, of course.

And what a year! The Tet offensive, destroying the "Light at the end of the tunnel" theory of pending "victory" in Vietnam. The continued civil rights and anti-war demonstrations, riots, on and on. A decade of turmoil. And who would replace LBJ? The field was wide open.

…….ringing doorbells for Bobby Kennedy or Eugene McCarthy. But consider this. Hubert Humphrey came on campus later, with the nomination, and was roundly welcomed.
