On this day, March 31, 1968, Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not be running for another term.

I watched on my family’s one and only TV, which was black and white, of course.

And what a year! The Tet offensive, destroying the "Light at the end of the tunnel" theory of pending "victory" in Vietnam. The continued civil rights and anti-war demonstrations, riots, on and on. A decade of turmoil. And who would replace LBJ? The field was wide open.
