The change in Michigan handgun registration requirements
I didn't know about this until I got involved in a thread in GD about gun laws in Michigan and found it then.
Here is the change:
"Passed in December, Public Act 377 allows for the change that does not require that a license to purchase a pistol be registered with the local police department. The act repealed a law that prohibits purchasing a pistol from a federally licensed dealer unless a person gets a “purchase permit” from local police, but left this requirement in place for person-to-person sales. Federal law already requires gun sellers to perform an “instant background check” on the buyer using a federal database."

I'd still have to have the gun registered, with the State Police, and go thru a background check but it does eliminate a couple of stops at the local police department. Michigan is a "Shall Issue" state and getting the permit from the local police under the old law was more of a formality.
I kinda like this new law as the nearest gun shops where I live are about 50 miles away. Before, if I was to go to a gun shop and saw a revolver I'd like to buy, I'd have to first go back to the sheriff's office, go thru a background check and get a permit to purchase (which was only valid for a certain number of days), drive back to the gun shop to get the gun and then return back to the sheriff's office within 10 days of purchase to have it registered.
Now I can go thru the background check and have the gun registered right at the gun shop.
