Tennessee is among 34 states that don’t require any background checks for private sales of firearms, even if the sale is handled by an online site.

But now, the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns is calling for the federal government to mandate background checks in all gun sales. It’s sparked an emotional debate that even divides gun-rights advocates. Opponents decry the idea as an affront to individual freedoms and say citizens should be able to sell private property without government interference.

But supporters argue that guns sales should require more accountability on the part of the seller and the buyer to reduce the chances that a gun will fall into the wrong hands.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who helped organize the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, recently released a report criticizing Tennessee, among other states, for having buyers willing to sell guns to people they knew could not pass a background check.

Since "Mayors Against All Guns" has a much higher percentage of convicted felons than any state's CCW permit holders, why in heavens name would you credit a thing they said?

Some of the MAAG are also GOP. As the resident "Left Wing Warrior", how can you tell us that anything from the GOP is all evil in one thread, but they are OK if they support gun control? Bloomie bulldozes OWS and he's a total jerk. Bloomie wants to ban guns and you can't wait to send him a check? Sounds like a pretty banal double standard.

In fact it seems you specialize in cutting and pasting other peoples points of view, cartoons, stories, et. al. and pass it off as your own point of view. Not much in the way of original thinking from you on these issues it seems.

I could understand saying something on the order of: "You know, I disagree with with So-and-So about most issues, but they're on the money in this
instance." Like Dick Cheney's stance on marriage equality, for example- or more importantly, most of the right wing's stance on the Second Amendment

But unless I'm greatly mistaken, no one that has commented favorably on Bloomberg's antigun jihad has offered any criticism whatsoever for
any of his other stances. To put it crudely, some DUers have swallowed his koolaid.

The heck with "online". Go open your local free "Penny Saver" magazine and look in the "Sporting Goods" section. There are millions upon millions of firearms for sale by private individuals every day for anyone who is willing to pay market prices for used firearms.

I would not mind background checks for all firearm sales, so long as firearm ownership anonymity is preserved.

Relative to Tennesee the state of New York has over three times as many people and yet there are more people in Tennesee each year that die from gunshot. The 12/7/2011 National Vital Statistics Reports Final Data for 2008 demonstrates that 963 people died from gunfire in all of NY while 985 people died from gunshots in Tennesee.
With that population disparity that means the rate per 100,000 of people dying from guns is 322% higher in Tennesee than in NY. (15.8 v 4.9). Nationally the rate is 10.4.

10. There is already a federal law...

...which makes it illegal for any seller to knowingly sell a firearm to a prohibited person. Bloomberg just needs to ask for more funding so that the feds can investigate and prosecute those who knowingly sell guns to prohibited persons. Simply enforce current laws, there is no need for more laws.
