House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte said Wednesday his panel will take up gun control in this session of Congress, but a universal background check would most likely not be a part of that work.
The fact of the matter is were going to look at all of these issues, but I think where were going to find the ability to produce legislation is going to be focused on two things: One is improving the background check system, but universal background checks I do not think will be a part of that, the Virginia Republican said at a breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor. The other will be improving the efforts to crack down on illegal sales of firearms on the streets.
Goodlatte said he believes that universal background checks would not stop criminals from getting guns, and there is not enough being done to prosecute people who fill out false information in background checks now.

Expectations that major gun control laws will be enacted continue to diminish. At this point, the possibility of any type of ban passing is very remote. Even universal background check legislation, the supposed signature piece to the President's package of proposals, is hitting rough waters. Negotiations for compromise on background checks are presently stymied in the Senate over record keeping requirements. In the House, if background check legislation can't make it out of the Judiciary Committee, in all likelihood it won't make it to the floor for a vote.

(153 posts)I am a 16 years old Malaysian teen who is dreaming of going to USA to study and live there since I am a child. Due to my pro USA stance, I sometimes have some disagreement with my schoolmates who are not as like-minded as me.
However, recently I am shocked to hear the tragic Sandy Hook school shooting spree that took 26 innocent lives. This made me to rethink going to USA according to my plans and made me became scared that whether I will be the next victim of the next shooting spree if Mr President hasn't ban firearm sales to people with troubled background. So, I, together with WE THE PEOPLE, hopes that Obama will ban firearms sales to these people for a BETTER and SAFER future.
