"You had mentioned that day you voted, owners of gun stores that the expanded background checks would harm," Erica Lafferty said, according to NBC News. "I am just wondering why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn't more important than that."
Ayotte responded: "Erica, I, certainly let me just say - I'm obviously so sorry."
"And, um, I think that ultimately when we look at what happened in Sandy Hook, I understand that's what drove this whole discussion -- all of us want to make sure that doesn't happen again," Ayotte said.
...
Unsatisfied with Ayotte's answer, Lafferty "stood and stormed out" of the town hall. "I had had enough," she said.
The nation's top gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation each began running radio ads on Monday in New Hampshire thanking Ayotte for opposing legislation that would have expanded background checks on firearm purchases.

(813 posts)The answer might run counter to the narrative.
We're only supposed to see a traumatized face, and that is supposed to close the discussion.
I wonder how much gravitas anti-gunners give to the words of Susan Hupp. Would they be willing to legislate based on her emotional pleas?

(6,057 posts)What they were talking about is EXPANDING background checks to PRIVATE SALES. Ayotte claimed that it would hurt gun stores if they were required to run background checks for PRIVATE FIREARMS TRANSFERS.

(17,502 posts)Would not cover most private sales. That was the point

(905 posts)You shortened your walls of text into something kind of legible. Now start using quotation marks and hot links when quoting things rather than italics and I will be really impressed. As for curing you of your name calling well I have given up hope for that.

I'm not trying to impress you in the slightest. I'll post the way I see fit.

Skimming on its own should not be used when complete comprehension of the text is the objective. Skimming is mainly used when researching and getting an overall idea of the text. Nonetheless, when time is limited, skimming or skipping over text can aid comprehension. Duggan & Payne (2009) compared skimming with reading normally, given only enough time to read normally through half of a text. They found that the main points of the full text were better understood after skimming (which could view the full text) than after normal reading (which only viewed half the text). There was no difference between the groups in their understanding of less important information from the text..

(1,273 posts)how would background checks have saved Lafferty's mother? The answer, of course, is that they wouldn't. It would just be another law that Lanza violated during his rampage -- transferring the guns to himself without a background check after murdering his mother. But you can't say that to a surviving relative. It makes you come off as heartless, which is why the other side uses victims. It's to prevent logic from entering the discussion.

(2,969 posts)even a NH resident? I feel like the walk out was planned and filmed by MAIG to get in the news cycle. Astro-turfing at its finest.

going for the full block from DU?

(6,185 posts)Wow! Nice ego you got there.
Everybody but the Bloomberg syncophants are blocked for the "other group" so if that's a standard of some kind, it's pretty broad.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)that's so low it does get into TOS territory.
you can disagree with me all you want.
but say a Newtown victim isn't worth a Senator's time? that's practically trolling, not to mention completely heartless.
oh, but if a *gun* was hurt in any of these situations, then by all means, be very, very upset, such as guns melted down in gun buybacks run by Arizona police departments. oh then, by all means, we must protect the gun.

If his child is that unimportant to him, I can't regard him as much of a human being, much less a father. If other people's children aren't worth saving to him, then I'd probably tell him to go home, curl up in his fetal position and fellate his gun barrel to his heart's content until he gets it to come. problem solved.

(2,969 posts)for constituents, not political side shows pushing an agenda. Ayotte represents NH, not CT. Two very different states.
If you are going to post things outside of the Ivory Tower be ready for differing opinions. If you don't want that then stay in the echo chamber.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)honestly, i think you are trolling this issue.
if you honestly believed it, you'd post it in the main forum, which would take more guts.
JohnnyBoots
(2,969 posts)That will get flamed and eventually locked? Yes, all differing opinions are from trolls. It must be great to live in a world where you are always right.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)ironically, you stay in this group because your abhorrent post is accepted and even encouraged.
JohnnyBoots
(2,969 posts)if she is a NH resident "abhorrent"? Get a grip.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)you are saying that no member of a Newtown family be allowed to talk at the town hall meeting.
don't be coy about this. if you have the courage of your convictions, own it, don't run away from it as you are doing.
they are not a NH resident then they don't belong there. I don't care who they are. If they are a NH resident then they should be allowed to speak their mind. That's not a foreign concept. Local politics should stay local.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)so it turns out, your abhorrent opinion is based on the erroneous thought that a Senator is a local official and makes no decisions that are national or international in nature.
JohnnyBoots
(2,969 posts)state of NH. Why should she care what someone in CT thinks? Local politics in that it was a local town hall in NH for NH residents. She was not holding a public press conference in DC. There's a diffrence, though it seems lost on you.
So, if the NRA started a town hall campaign across the country popping in here and there at local events you'd be OK with Wayne Lapierre asking a loaded questions and then storming off for some camera time to get in the news cycle? Because that's the exact same thing you're defending.

(3,249 posts)Sorry CD, your position loses. I don't see any support for it here. You'd probably get a better reception in the other group.

They keep failing dismally at closing the whole Gungeon, so it seems they are trying a "one at a time" approach.
