'The NRA's going to get involved soon,' says business owner after Williamsburg ZBA denies permit

WILLIAMSBURG — The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 3-0 on Monday night to deny CRD Metalworks a special permit that would allow it to keep operating on Hyde Hill Road.

The neighborhood is not zoned for the business, which makes tree-splitting equipment. Owner Chris Duval promised to fight the ruling in court.

"The NRA's going to get involved soon," he said. "It's going to get ugly before it's over."

Neighbors of the rural area have complained about the noise from the factory as well as from the shooting that takes place on the property. Duval and some of his 14 employees shoot during work breaks and after their shifts, Duval said. Some are also upset about the Confederate flag Duval has raised near the building and other signs they consider garish.

Just because the owner says the NRA is going to get involved doesn't mean they will (and I doubt they will).

Must be a very slow news day if this is all you have for us today and as usual, without any comments of your own.

If they weren't shooting where it disturbed neighboring residents I doubt there would be much of an issue for either side.

Snow, who has long been at odds with CRD, filed a complaint with Hasbrouck on Aug. 10 saying the company should be ordered to shut down immediately because its employees are using the property as a shooting range and harassing neighbors.

On at least four occasions since the zoning board decision, there have been instances of "heavy continuous shooting with high-caliber rifles ... and/or shotguns and/or assault rifles" at CRD, disturbing neighbors, wrote Snow.

"The excessive shooting constitutes a public safety hazard, and there is clear evidence that the shooting is directly combined with alcohol use," Snow wrote in his most recent complaint to Hasbrouck.

Snow said that he represents the concerns of about a half-dozen neighbors who are afraid to speak up out of fear of retaliation. "The entire neighborhood is living in fear," said Snow. "It's not just me and my family." Snow said CRD workers litter peoples' lawns with beer cans, and that Duval had named his latest gun "Henrietta" after Wallace, with whom he shares a common driveway.

no less took any affirmative action, on behalf of CRD Metalworks concerning their public nuisance and zoning dispute?

Do you just search "NRA" on Google News, and post everything you find?

Do you actually read entire articles to determine if the issue at play is actually gun rights or control?

Do you have an opinion or purported insight you wish to share or discuss besides the news dump?

At best, this should have been posted in GD, as the cease and desist order might have First Amendment implications since CRD could claim the order was a pretext to discriminate against protected speech (i.e., the Confederate flag), rather than really about the nuisance or zoning.

10. Confederate flag-flying CRD Metalworks disinvited from Cummington Fair

Aug 2015
WILLIAMSBURG — CRD Metalworks, which famously flew the Confederate battle flag in the weeks after the Charleston AME church massacre, has been told it may not participate in the Cummington Fair, which is scheduled to run Aug. 27-30.

The 17 Hyde Hill Road company manufactures industrial-scale firewood processing machines, which it ships all over the world.

CRD last year had a place of honor at the fair, where it conducted educational demonstrations of its machinery and its capabilities, said Bill Perlman, a member of the fair's governing board.

This year, CRD won't be welcome, said Perlman, citing a recent vote of the non-profit Hillside Agricultural Society, which has been running the fair for nearly 150 years.

What does this story have to do with the purpose of the forum?

Discuss gun politics, gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence

If you're going to Google dump, you can at least have the courtesy to actually post stories that concern firearms.

Heck, the the Mass Live article doesn't even mention your favorite bogeyman, the NRA.

He went on to say that the last year has been "horrific" for his family because "a few folks have taken us to task over a myriad of issues I view as protected by right, and by Constitution."

Duval confirmed that he and his workers regularly discharge firearms at the CRD property, a practice he insists is legal. The use of the facility as a shooting range has elicited complaints from nearby residents

The story, including your original article, are about a zoning and a public nuisance noise dispute. Per the forum subject matter, the story has absolutely nothing to do with "gun politics, gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence."

Despite your foolish and misleading OP, the NRA is not involved at all, and the zoning dispute concerns whether the property may be used for commercial purposes. At best, the articles imply the zoning and nuisance matters may be pretext to improperly punish CRD for their display of the Confederate flag, a First Amendment issue, and hence a story marginally appropriate for the General Discussion forum.

And yes, I read all the articles before commenting. We might properly ask if you actually read the articles you post, or just search for key words like "NRA," "gun," firearm," and "shooting," and ridiculously believe that somehow if such words appear, the story is relevant to the forum and overall subject matter.

Using your logic, if a member of the NRA was in a car accident, a local shooting range raised money for a children's hospital, or a museum opened a new Revolutionary War exhibit that included period firearms, these stories would also implicate the Second Amendment and related RKBA law and policy.

There is ample news and editorials concerning firearms in crime and Second Amendment politics. If the CRD story is the best you can post and/or you still choose to defend its relevancy here, I suggest your Google skills leave room for improvement and, more importantly, now better understand the poor state of gun control advocacy in the country.
