BEVERLY A Hamilton police sergeant was found dead inside his sport utility vehicle late last night in an apparent suicide, hours after he allegedly shot and seriously wounded a Beverly police officer, officials said.
A late-night police search culminated back at the scene of the first shooting, outside a Starbucks off Route 1A in Beverly, where the body of Sergeant Ken Nagy was discovered in his Saab SUV.
He has taken his life, said Essex District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett. It is a tragic day.
Police initially responded to the Starbucks at 29 Enon St. at 5:48 p.m., where they found Beverly police Officer Jason Lantych wounded, Blodgett said at a news conference last night.

(33,982 posts)that the 'guns in starbucks' issue had anything to do with this, since police officers can carry anywhere they damn well please when on duty.

(4,941 posts)The thread headline is seriously misleading. The shooting did NOT occur IN a Starbucks but rather outside. The shooter was one of those police types, you know, the ONLY ones that should be able to "tote" a weapon because they've been thoroughly checked out and stuff. You know, ONLY they can be trusted with guns.
Be that as it may, my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

(4,941 posts)if this had been a CCW holder pulling his weapon and shooting IN Starbucks, this thread would have 100 replies and the anti-gun (noticably absent from this thread) people would be dominating the conversation.

(6,185 posts)Last week when I stopped in the local Starbuck's I was surprised to see they are now selling (some very expensive) donuts as well as their "scones" and other $3.95 pastry items.

The fellow who was shot in the groin worked with the wife of the guy who killed himself.
This wasn't anything other than a love triangle thing, that ended very badly.

(2,631 posts)happens all the time in the LEO community. It's rampant in some departments. It's a wonder we don't have more cop on cop shootings.
Nothing good came from this mess. Maybe some gun prohibitionist can use it to dip their fingers in some blood or something but the reality is it's just a tragic mess.

(135,425 posts)The declaration that there would be "no investigation" has been walked back by one of the police department public affairs flacks.
I don't know why they changed their mind, but it could be because that the guy who lived (and had his business shot up) was engaged in "conduct unbecoming" by carrying on a workplace romance with a married woman.
That's speculation, but it seems logical.

(2,631 posts)It's what cops do. And they do it to each other with a savage kind of glee that can chill you to the bone if you watch it in action.
It doesn't matter all that much if the details are ever made public. I suspect the wounded victim may be sweating his job right now. And that's probably what the investigation will settle. They also need to look at how both departments handled what was obviously a serious workplace conflict.
MADem
(135,425 posts)The wife of the guy who killed himself had a pretty good job herself with the wounded guy's department--she did something with regard to domestic violence, either investigating or as a victim advocate.
She was one half of that "conduct unbecoming" scenario.

(135,425 posts)That never happens here, as a rule.
Oh well, that's the reason for the edit!

(10,201 posts)Aren't the vast majority of all shootings technically outside a Starbucks?
There was a shooting in Philly today. I was in the Starbucks in the I-87 rest stop in NY. I can say for a fact that the shooting in Philly was outside of that Starbucks.

But ... watch out for that guy that keeps mumbling "Damn T-baggers" and tries to take pictures of your ass in the chair, while you drink your coffee or tea. He creeps me out.

So, to be on the safe side, you might not want to go to any Starbuck's in Georgia for a while.
