N.J. Senate passes bill revising 'smart gun' law

State lawmakers voted Monday to roll back a stringent gun control measure, saying this rewrite of a 12-year-old law mandating the eventual exclusive sale of “smart guns” in New Jersey would help push manufacturers to get the technology onto store shelves.

With little debate, the state Senate voted 22-15 to approve the bill, which was introduced last month.

If it becomes law, the bill would require all firearms wholesalers and retailers in the state to offer at least one smart gun model for sale. Those outlets would also be allowed to sell all other legal models of handguns.

The current law mandates that, three years after smart guns become available for sale in any state in the country, no other type of handgun could be sold in New Jersey.

"Smart Guns" will gain widespread acceptance, as soon as a municipality adopts them exclusively for their police department and they prove to be reliable and safe as advertised.

Oh, and available in a larger caliber than a .22LR.

demand that their security only carry "smart guns," then I'll begin to take notice.

When the military exclusively adopts "smart guns," that's when my opinions may begin to truly shift.

... that their "once one smart gun is available" ban on all other firearms was a guarantee that no current gun manufacturer would want to have anything to do with the development of smart-gun technology. "Yes, let's hurry up and develop a product that will force the removal of all our other products from a major market."

What were they thinking? That some tech start-up would want to enter the highly competitive and politically volatile firearms business?

They're kind of one of the top authorities on defensive handguns and ammo in the U.S. When they adopt a "smart" gun, then you can be pretty sure that others will follow. Until then it's just a gadget.
