Guns Are Killing People and It is Not The “Bad Guys” Getting Killed: More NRA Propaganda Exposed!

One of the biggest myths of the NRA and gun advocates is that guns are critical for self-protection and the saying goes that all that is necessary to ward off an attack of a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. The NRA likes to frame things in this dichotomy of “good vs. evil” creating a simplification of reality very appealing to conservatives. In doing so they neglect the accidents which are all too common like the recent incident in which a two-year-old found the gun of his mother’s boyfriend under a car seat and accidentally shot his mother in the back killing her.

Well, even the myth of guns being used frequently for defensive purposes turns out to be another falsehood. According to a recent study by the Violence Policy Center (VPC) citing data collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation:

In 2012, across the nation there were only 259 justifiable homicides involving a private citizen using a firearm reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program as detailed in its Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR).

That same year, there were 8,342 criminal gun homicides tallied in the SHR. In 2012, for every justifiable homicide in the United States involving a gun, guns were used in 32 criminal homicides. And this ratio, of course, does not take into account the tens of thousands of lives ended in gun suicides or unintentional shootings that year.

if a person uses a gun to protect themselves you want them to kill their assailant?

I happy if both parties live without injury or death.

the mental disconnect it takes to rant about gun owners being "judge, jury and executioner", "itching to kill" and "looking for the opportunity to murder" (among many, many more accusations) then turn around and crow about how few DGUs end in death.

...And concealed carry, then wonder why there are fewer DGUs?

Of course, you're not really counting DGUs, are you?

You're counting DGUs that result in a homicide.

You and your side commonly portray people that own guns for self defense are trigger-happy and can't WAIT to shoot themselves a minority or two. That they sit around masturbating to tactical firearms publications and memorizing shooting scenarios and training to kill kill kill.

Then you claim that the rate of DGUs are very very low. Wait a minute, how can that be?

One of these things must be wrong, yes? And since only one of these things is a stone-cold undisputed FACT, the other must be WRONG.

The fact is that hundreds of thousands of times a year, possibly over a million, guns are grabbed in self defense and only a tiny fraction of those times result in a discharge. And only a tiny fraction of those result in a death.

This means, of course, that gun owners using a gun to defend themselves are reluctant to shoot and reluctant to kill.

And I just bet that causes cognitive dissonance headaches for you.

It explains, at minimum, your disinclination to engage in debate.

These "hundreds of thousands of times a year, possibly over a million" incidents of defensive gun use are mostly fantasies in the minds of gun owners who need to rationalize their obsession with firearms and concealed carry.

The estimates vary from 50,000 to several million incidents a year. Most social scientists agree with an estimate of 250,000 to 350,000 a year.

"There's no evidence...."

Horse shit.

There's evidence that you don't like so you deny it.

And you sure as hell proved my point about your opinions of gun owners, didn't you?

You just can't reconcile the reality of DGU with what you think it should look like based on your caricature of gun owners that your groupthink has created.

If defensive-minded gun owners were really as blood thirsty as you claim there would be 259 justified homicides a week, not a year.

Those that disagree with the Kleck study showing roughly 2 million DGUs a year (in the early 90s) counter with the DoJ survey results of 108,000.

That's still twenty (20) DGUs to one justifiable homicide.

The bloodthirstyness is in your head, in your internal caricature of gun owners that you've created.
