14 Attorneys General Call for More Research on Gun Violence

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is leading an effort by 14 attorneys general to encourage Congress to allow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study gun violence as a public health issue.

“Federal restrictions on CDC funding stifle important progress we have made to help mitigate the devastating effects of gun violence on families and communities in Massachusetts and across the country,” Healey said Tuesday at a White House meeting on gun violence. “With this critical tool at our fingertips, we are calling on Congress to take immediate action as millions of lives are affected by this public health crisis every year.”

Since 1996, Congress has included a provision in its annual appropriations bill that bans the CDC from using any money for any study “to advocate or promote gun control.”

Gun rights groups have supported the ban. They contend that characterizing guns as a public health issue is merely an effort to disguise moves to expand gun control.

Hey Secmo, please answer my simple question Duckhunter935 May 2016 #4
Healey sees "devastaing effects of gun violence" and a "public health crisis." Yet wants "research." Eleanors38 May 2016 #6

...because it doesn't say what the controllers wanted it to say. Therefore, it didn't -- nay, could not -- happen.

It's really quite simple, when you look at it from their point of view...

The CDC is NOT banned from researching firearm related deaths. That's just not true.

They are, rightfully I believe, not permitted to "advocate or promote gun control".

The language in question reads, "None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control."

In my opinion, gun control is a religion, an exercise of faith if you will. It should not be intertwined with scientific research.

"...disguise moves to expand gun control" indeed. He wants agencies, departments or foundations to keep churning out pot-leads-to-heroin "research." At taxpayer expense, of course.

There's actually a great deal of research on gun violence......but either The Controllers are so ignorant they're not aware that it exists, or they're fully aware......and simply want to re-litigate various cases. The latter has become a common and obvious piece of deceit ----- "There's simply not enough research on gun violence!!" (SNORT!)
