Related: About this forumCanadian long gun registry to be abolished next week
Bill C-19, which abolishes Canada's registry of long guns and mandates the destruction of records of previously registered firearms, has passed its
second reading in the Senate and will be taken up for the third and final time at 2:00 PM Tuesday. After that, it will be presented for royal assent
(which is automatic) and will then become law. Yea Canada!

(17,493 posts)the chances of it ever succeeding in the United States is extremely low.
It would be far better to use the money to create a national registration system to improve our police departments.

(85 posts)You still need a license to own or buy a firearm or ammunition - a law the vast majority of Canadians support. Handguns still need to be registered although that is nothing new since IIRC the first restrictions on handguns came into effect in 1927. I did not support the long gun registry but it did far less damage to the country than is being done by the price we had to pay to get rid of it - Harper's neo fascist government.

(17,502 posts)I saw a debate CBC between a guy from the NFA and a gun control advocate, and I got the impression that most gun owners support the PAL system. One question I have about Canadian law that always struck me as odd, but I can't find anyone who can answer.
Handguns have been licensed and registered since 1934. The machine gun registry began in 1952 but no permit requirement until they became prohibited in 1977. In other words, Canada was stricter on pistols than the US, but more liberal on machine guns than the US until 1977. What gives?
