June Gun Sales Crush Previous Record

June Gun Sales Crush Previous Record

FBI reports more than 2.1 million gun checks

BY: Stephen Gutowski July 3, 2016 3:06 pm

June 2016 saw the most FBI gun background checks of any June since the current system went into effect.

The agency reported on Sunday that it processed more than 2.1 million gun related checks in June, an increase of more than 600,000 over the previous record set last year. That makes June the 14th month in a row to see a new background check record, including every month of 2016. This year is on pace to break 2015’s record for most checks in a year.

Last month’s numbers are still lower than the first four months of the year, which tracks with standard seasonal lulls in sales for the industry. However, June’s numbers are higher than May’s—a departure from previous years when June had traditionally seen the fewest checks of any month.

June’s record comes as gun and ammunition dealers have seen spikes in sales following the deadly terror attack in Orlando, Florida and a subsequent push for new gun control measures in the House and Senate. Some companies saw a five-fold increase in sales during the weeks following the attack and legislative push.

“Yes, we have seen a dramatic spike in sales volume (around five times normal levels) especially in the .223/5.56 caliber and to a lesser extent 9mm, .45 ACP, and .308 but the increase is definitely across the board,” Scott Blick, managing partner at Ammunition Depot, told the Washington Free Beacon in June.

2. How do you explain Illinois, then? In IL, one must have a "FOID" card to purchase a firearm.

This is a far more objective way of determining the number of gun owners (in IL, anyway) than depending on people to answer an anonymous person truthfully when asked on the phone, "Do you have any guns in your house?".

The most recent data I could find was for 2009 -2013. In that short time, the number of people authorized to legally own guns in the Land of Lincoln rose by 33%.

Is IL a pro-gun outlier among the other 49 states?

(upon edit) Found more info! From 2010 to 2015, the number of people with gun licenses went up by 66% in Massachusetts.

Another outlier?

9. Illinois now has 2.0 million FOID holders

Per the Illinois State Police report, it's now slightly more than 2 million.

Some tried to claim it was the rush for Concealed Carry permits in 2014 and 2015, but most if the people getting CC permits already had FOIDs

No other reason to get a FOID card other than buying a gun and ammunition.

11. That's why I just laugh every time I see the latest "study" from the grabber types ....

... about how there are fewer gun owners all the time. It's an article of faith for them and a beloved meme.

Then I drive by the four new huge high end shooting ranges going up, in a 15 mile radius on the Southwest side of Chicago suburbs.

And I think of what really stupid business people they and the banks that financed each of these million $ plus projects must be, to build expensive new ranges for a sport that dwindling.

Or, then again, those beloved studies might just be full of crap and say what they hope for and not what is real.

12. I work directly across the street from the largest indoor shooting range in our county.

It opened a couple of years ago, and there doesn't seem to be any shortage of patronage -- the parking lot is always full.

According to The Controllers, we should expect it to close it's doors "any day now".

13. "Is IL a pro-gun outlier among the other 49 states?"

Clearly it is! Just as Texas and Florida are outliers since they record very good behavior on the part of concealed carry permit holders.

3. Do you have any evidence that this is the case?

Or are you just asserting it without evidence?

"We do get a lot of first-time buyers here,” said Charles Webb, who works for South Ridge Arms Inc. in Kent.

If you're saying that, then aren't you saying that no gun-control laws will pass?
