Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumDo you agree with this statement from President Obama on gun control?
However, I believe that if common sense prevails, we can get beyond wedge issues and stale political debates to find a sensible, intelligent way to make the United States of America a safer, stronger place.
I'm willing to bet that responsible, law-abiding gun owners agree that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few - dangerous criminals and fugitives, for example - from getting their hands on a gun in the first place.
I'm willing to bet they don't think that using a gun and using common sense are incompatible ideas - that we should check someone's criminal record before he can check out at a gun seller; that an unbalanced man shouldn't be able to buy a gun so easily; that there's room for us to have reasonable laws that uphold liberty, ensure citizen safety and are fully compatible with a robust Second Amendment.

(1,089 posts)While I oppose most regulation on guns, there's absolutely a need for some. The 2A is still being explored in the courts to find the limits of its protections, but there are certainly restrictions that can be handled correctly.
As distasteful as I find the Brady Campaign, the NICS system is a very good idea and has created a significant (not absolute, but significant) barrier to criminals acquiring guns, while creating the smallest possible burden on citizens. State agencies must be diligent in reporting relevant information, and this can certainly be improved.

(12,132 posts)I suppose I would need to see the actual law in question to decide if it is reasonable to me and upholds my liberty.

(27,711 posts)I know it's there and I know it's political. So what's your point in pushing the "what a bummer for the militia believing antis" line? What is an "anti" in your mind? Is President Obama an "anti"

(9,709 posts)but he's also a politician...he and his people know gun control, at least on the national level, is a loser, so he's altered his 2nd Amendment stance accordingly..that's good enough for me.
Now, if you want to bring up Obama and MMJ...well, I've got a real beef with him on that..

I don't see how this can be accomplished 100% of the time but there is definitely room for improvements.

(29 posts)do they determine if the person is unstable or not. Also some people have their judgment impaired by various things & what if they decide to shoot someone ?
On another note ( I know this is off topic & I apologize ) I need to apologize to Ruby the Liberal & independent piney because I posted a thread & gave a link that I wasn't supposed to. I didn't do it intentionally, I just didn't know it was not accepted.
I am new here (just joined a few weeks ago) & there's a lot I'm still learning ) I tried to respond to your posts but the thread was locked & I can't send pm's because I haven't posted enough messages. I will make sure it doesn't happen again.

First of all - whose definition of "common sense"? "Common sense" has told many that more guns obviously means more gun crime. We know this isn't true. Many aspects of gun violence/gun restriction are counterintuitive - ergo "common sense" can be not just useless, but life threatening.

(23,367 posts)Enforcing existing law should be good enough.
I disagree with a couple of minor points:
Failing to qualify for Army enlistment should not disqualify anyone. There are many reasons for being turned down.
Rewarding states for providing more info might be ok, if talking about criminal records. Sharing medical or psychological treatment info probably violates HIPAA restrictions and should not be rewarded. No problem with sharing data if a court finds someone incompetent or worse.

(7,745 posts)We ALREADY have to get FBI background checks to buy guns. Felons are ALREADY banned having guns. The mentally unfit are ALREADY banned from having guns.
What exactly are Obama's policy recommendations?

(60,567 posts)The law should be modified so there is a way for someone who is not a gun dealer to use the National Instant Check System. Appropriate safeguards would be needed to prevent misuse.
