http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2012-08-01/story/jacksonville-neighbors-including-68-year-old-couple-get-jump-intruderWhen a FL man tried to break into a home, he was greeted by birdshot flying his way. After being shot at, the intruder fled to a neighbors home, breaking in to escape the fire of homeowner #1. Unfortunately for him, this was the wrong house.

Kinda funny he wanted them to call the police and give him shelter, instead they beat him up and pulled a gun on him.

(3,220 posts)He wanted them to call the police because he thought "they were after him," whoever "they" were in his mind at the time. I think his mind was in "outer space" from all the drugs he took, whatever they were.

(2,239 posts)it just creates shallow wounds that bleed like hell. Birdshot is not effective at incapacitating determined attackers.
Use 00 buck or slugs in a shotgun.

(5,455 posts)Bird shot within 15-20 feet is very effective and reduces the chances of over penetration of the walls, useful for those with family members in other rooms or for those living in apartments or condos.
There is NO single load for self defense. You tailor the load to YOUR specific surroundings.

(5,455 posts)although to a degree you proved my point, that slugs and buckshot over penetrate in a common house/apartment/condo.
This comes up on the shooting boards from people worried about over penetration and according to the police officers bird shot works quite well in the distances I mentioned above.
The BEST round proved to be a .223/5.56 hollow point or frangible round, but the muzzle blast from such a rifle is excessive inside.

My biggest qualm is the FBI 12" penetration standard. Birdshot fails that test. Max at close range is about 6", not enough. You want 12-18". I don't care what people protect themselves with, but if the need arises I hope they have the proper to tools to stop a threat to their person and/or family.
Birdshot suffers as an SD load because there is no such thing as compound penetration. It's like getting shot with a bunch of .13 caliber pellets from a high power air rifle. They all penetrate just as much as they would from an air rifle going about 1000-1100 fps. It may psychologically deter, but it's not likely to stop the threat through a drop in blood pressure or a nervous system hit. Light stuff just doesn't penetrate enough.
It's not worth betting your life on. [link:http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=176|

(24,853 posts)The shell in the chamber is birdshot. Second shell double-ought. Third shell - slug.

(2,239 posts)considering it's semi (way less chance of short stroking) and birdshot is just the first volley.

I've found some shotguns, specfically the Benelli, aren't always 100% reliable with bird shot and will fail to fully cycle the action.

(26,603 posts)'don't-break-into-my-house' thing. What the fuck, ya know, it's just stuff. Society would be so much more civil if folks would just talk to each other, and find out what's going on and that we're really all the same inside. Freaking gunslingers... </ileus>
