Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumGovernment can use buying power to force gun changes
Yes, people pull the trigger but guns are the instrument of death.
Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror.
So, what have we heard from the presidential contenders? Pablum. Mitt Romney hides behind a misunderstanding of the Second Amendment, and the White House blames Congress. Here's what White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Monday: "President Obama does support renewing the assault weapons ban. I think what I've noted in the past, and what I noted here, is that there has been reluctance by Congress to pass that renewal."

(8,142 posts)Must be scraping the bottom of the barrel though if you've got to dredge up an article from August 9.
So now you are posting a link to an article that says:
""President Obama does support renewing the assault weapons ban. I think what I've noted in the past"
I fully agree with you though that this is the wrong step for the President to take, especially after he has said that he supports our 2A right to gun ownership.

There are as of 2006, 683,396 full time state, city, university and college, metropolitan and non-metropolitan county, and other law enforcement officers in the United States. There are approx. 120,000 full time law enforcement personnel working for the federal government adding up to a total number of 800,000 law enforcement personnel in the U.S.

Then there's this..
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports
In 2010 alone there were over 14,000,000 NICS gun transfers.
Two minutes of googling results in total destruction of his idea. The public buys far, far more guns than government, and government is a huge pain in the ass to deal with.
His idea is stupid at the core. The only result would be law enforcement would have a hard time buying guns.

(10,136 posts)However, California tried it with the result that some gun manufacturers stopped selling to the cops since the CA civilian market was prohibited. Pissed the hell out of the cops.
Anyone recall who has the current DOD M4 contract? I am pretty sure it is not Colt.

(2,038 posts)The Defense Department and the city of New York are among the largest purchasers of guns. If the president and the mayor truly believe that semi-automatic weapons should not be available to private purchasers, and that magazines with more than 10 bullets should not be sold over the counter, they should simply say that, from now on, the federal government and the city of New York, as a matter of public safety, will not buy any weapons or ammunition from companies that do not agree to pull semi-automatics from their stock and refuse to produce magazines with more than 10 rounds other than for sale to the government.
And the small arms manufacturers like Colt, F.N. Herstal, Glock, LWRC, Remington and a half dozen others could justifiably jack up their prices to make up for the loss of business. I guess the author and the OP don't have a clue about facts like the DOD really doesn't buy as many guns as they think they do (Colt's 22,000 1911's to the USMC represents only 2% of the volume sales for a given year), and the DoD and LE agencies rely on contracts for service and repair of the arms they purchase. Those agencies rely on civilian sales to help buffer the bulk sales agreements (DoD only pays $650 for a M4 carbine) and local police agencies sure as hell can't afford to pay hundreds of thousands in extra costs. Stupidity. Pure. Absolute. Stupidity.

(6,801 posts)Both prayer and gun control are things that have been demonstrated not to work other than to make those invoking them feel a little better.
So pushing gun control to end violence as you do is essentially no different than praying to end hurricanes and the like. Maybe it makes you feel better, it certainly makes you feel self-righteous and does precisely nothing to prevent the problem you are aiming at.

"Texas Chainsaw Killer" is so much scarier than "Texas High-Capacity Magazine Killer"?
Would a chainsaw with an extra large fuel tank be considered an "assault chainsaw"?
