Tree trimmer injured in apparent accidental shooting

DAPHNE, Alabama -- A tree trimmer handling his gun while talking on his cell phone apparently accidentally shot himself Tuesday just outside Daphne, according to a new release from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department.
Mertens was sharpening his chainsaw while Horn was in his pickup truck talking on his cell phone "and apparently handling a Kel-tech 9 mm handgun," the news release said.
Horne told authorities he had laid the gun on his lap and bent over when the gun discharged, striking him in the lower right abdomen. The round passed through his back and the front seat, lodging in the rear seat.
