Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumWhy Young Republicans in Texas are teaming up with the NRA
In any event, it was a rare opportunity to see how closely the party and the lobby group work together though if there were radical new ideas about how the game could be played I didnt hear them.
Mostly it was about communication and networking, about making sure that each of the Young Republicans was properly integrated into the NRA and then signing up those who werent already members. It was about ensuring that the rookies had the correct messaging when canvassing for the NRAs goals.
In a nutshell, it was about establishing an early relationship between the NRA and young Republicans.

As Molly Ivins reminded us, even Democrats in Texas are conservative.
Texas is NRA heaven.

(9,494 posts)I have a Libertarian client who is retiring to a Dallas suburb in two years. She has already bought the house from the bank who foreclosed on the original family who lived there. She has been at the big banks or on "The Street" thirty five years and only visits Texas at Christmas too see her crazy brother.
I can't wait until the culture shock hits her. She has no idea how liberal she has become.

***snip***
B3. What is the libertarian position on gun control?
Consistently opposed. The revolutionaries who kicked out King George based their call for insurrection on the idea that Americans have not only the right but the duty to oppose a tyrannical government with force -- and that duty implies readiness to use force. This is why Thomas Jefferson said that "Firearms are the American yeoman's liberty teeth" and, in common with many of the Founding Fathers, asserted that an armed citizenry is the securest guarantee of freedom. Libertarians assert that "gun control" is a propagandist's lie for "people control", and even if it worked for reducing crime and violence (which it does not; when it's a crime to own guns, only criminals own them) it would be a fatally bad bargain.

Of course many from the large urban areas such as New York City have little familiarity with firearms and gun owners. Therefore your client might indeed have a cultural shock when she realizes how many gun owners there are in Texas.
However I have worked with people who migrated to Florida from gun unfriendly areas. Many actually decided to buy a firearm and enjoyed target shooting or owned it for self defense. Some obtained a concealed weapons permit and carried a handgun on a regular basis. One co-worker who came from the Bronx in New York City who had a carry permit used his handgun to stop a road raged individual from attacking him. No shot were fired and the situation ended peacefully.
I should point out that I often find those who live in cities like New York tend to look down on those who live in other areas of the nation such as Texas or Florida. For example you stated:
" It must be horrible to live in Texas if you aren't an asshole."
It is also equally sad that those who do live in states like Texas and Florida also have very negative opinions about those who live in cities like New York. I have often heard strong criticism from Floridians about the fact that those from New York city are impolite, pushy and obnoxious.
The truth is that good people live in all areas of our nation. It is also true that good people from these culturally different areas often disagree on issues such as gun control. When an individual moves to Texas or Florida from New York City he/she might discover that many well educated people own and responsibly use firearms while in New York City the very restrictive firearm laws largely limit the ownership of such weapons to the criminal element. Of course that is not always the case.

(17,502 posts)Oh wait, their claimed membership is less than half of National Firearms Association's membership. Might be about the same as NRA-UK's.

classist and anti rural as their US counterparts. From the comments
NRA = National Redneck Association.
My favorite comment was about buying AR-15 ammo at Wal Mart is not "freedom", odd coming from a country where a 12 year old can buy that very same ammo at Wal Mart.
