Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumDoes anyone seriously want to go back to 1926?
by repealing all federal gun laws including the very limited "mailing of pistols act" that Harding signed? We have all seen the hyperbole about "complete deregulation". I find the "you are an extremist if you don't want it my way" kind of a debate stopper.

But, in my hurry to post, I neglected to list the most important reason to go back to 1928.
I will go to Germany and do whatever I can to make sure Hitler gets accepted into Art School.

I would gladly give you the $30 that it would cost.

So, there's that.

(2,927 posts)But, seriously -- why a Luger? The single most un-reliable military handgun ever produced (luckily for some of my relatives).
Of course, the Luger has a coolness factor that cannot be denied, but if you're going for cool, might I suggest the Mauser C96 "Broomhandle". Just as cool and much more reliable.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)but I always thought they were cool. The Swiss used them until the 1970s.

(2,927 posts)... how many C96's are out there.
I'm sure they are more rare than Lugers

(12,072 posts)There were five in the series. In the first one he was given a .32 revolver. In the second he has what appears to be a couple of 9mm. I don't really remember what he had in the next three.
I liked the first two, the next three were poor.

(2,927 posts)... so it figured prominently in "Death Wish 3"
Originally designed to be a "hunting pistol ". It is a genuinely unique handgun, with a rotating bolt gas-blowback system (similar to an AK), interchangeable barrels (up to a ridiculous 18" , and an odd caliber (modified .45 magnum) designed to get .44 magnum muzzle velocity from a .45 cartridge.
GreenStormCloud
(12,072 posts)After enjoying the first two I was really disappointed in 3. So I don't remember the guns, except that on WWII veteran had an air-cooled variant of the M1919 machine gun. Probably an M1919A4.
Just looked it up on IMDB, and that gun is prominent in the poster art.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)Lugers, but not one C96 lately. I found a .45ACP luger made by Mauser from the 1970s. Still out of my price and practicality range.
Just the ones made by Mauser or all of the copies? I don't think anyone really knows. Harrison Ford waved around a modified one playing Han Solo.

(2,927 posts)How cool does a gun get if Han Solo had one?!
Almost as cool as this ...

(2,927 posts)... she's even more beautiful in 1080P. She looks so good in "Firefly" I was almost disappointed to see her in "Homeland".
The best part about that show is the dialogue. One of the best-written TV shows ever.

(2,927 posts)Can be found in good condition for $4,000 to 5,000. Over a million were made, in various calibers, however most of the later ones were made in China and quality is "inconsistent" at best.

(2,927 posts)... but it wasn't produced until 1938 -- we were discussing time-travel to 1928.
Of course, the finest handgun produced pre-1928 (in my humble opinion) was the Colt 1911. The gold-standard for semi-automatic handguns.

I carried a 1911 for 4 years tanking. The best ever. No argument.

We can only speculate how World History would have played out had he become a mediocre artist instead of Der Fuhrer.

(12,072 posts)The Nazis likely would have still come to power, but with someone who would not interfer with his Generals. If Hitler had left his generals alone to act as general he may have won WWII.
Alternate history is a fertile field for science fiction. Do you read any Harry Turtledove?

(950 posts)I remember reading a book about Hitler in Middle School that said that on the night of his graduation he got drunk and in a black out used his diploma as toilet paper and sent it back to the school.
The story goes that he woke up the next morning, didn't remember the event, couldn't find the diploma and went back to the school to ask for a copy. The school, of course, refused to give him one.
I don't remember what he was graduating from but I always assumed it was art school
