But both gun rights and gun control advocates say they believe the swaps do little to change a city's crime rate.
"If you look at the crime rate before and after, there's hardly even a blip. The numbers stay the same," said Dave Workman, senior editor for theGunMag.com published by the Second Amendment Foundation in Bellevue, Wash.
Memphis and its sponsorship partners will have a gun swap Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Bloomfield Baptist Church, 123 S. Parkway West. A person can turn in an unlimited number of guns for a maximum $150 in gas cards and two free tickets to a preseason for $150 in gas cards and two free tickets to a preseason Grizzlies game.

(26,602 posts)firearms ownership should be an individual choice and if someone is unable or unwilling to safely keep one then I'm fine with whatever disposal avenue they choose. My biggest objection to these events is that (although most guns are likely junk) some people might be encouraged by economic need to turn in something of real value, not knowing any better. I'd have more respect for the organizers if they had an appraiser on hand and gave a fair return, no matter what they ultimately did with the guns...

(950 posts)The most you can get is $150.00, you probably have to turn in 10 guns to get that

(950 posts)about a gun "buyback" in California(?) that was offering $100.00 per turned in gun. Apparently a THR member who owned a gun shop unloaded his entire supply of $80.00 Jimenez arms pistols on them and ran them out of money.
I have no way to validate the story but it would have been fun to watch

That is a brilliant plan that will surely eliminate crime.
