Police: Workplace gunman started shooting at dismissal meeting

October 5, 2012

By STEVE KARNOWSKI, Associated Press

Police reports released Friday provided new details of the shooting rampage at Accent Signage Systems last month that left six people dead, including the gunman, and three wounded. It was Minnesota's deadliest workplace shooting.

The reports show that the 36-year-old Engeldinger shot two of the company's top managers, John Souter and Rami Crooks, just as they were terminating him at the end of his workday Sept. 27.

"Engeldinger responded by saying 'oh really' and took out a gun that he had in a holster in his waist area," one report said ...

Your department head and his boss come to your desk and ask for your badge. Then they watch you clean our your desk and escort you out of the building.

In my case I knew it was coming so my last two weeks at work I left all of my personal belongings in my car and only took my RFID card and the company uniform into the plant.

As I said I knew it was coming so I was already interviewing at other companies. The morning of the third day of my "suspension" I was offered a job with another machine shop. When I got to my car I saw the missed call from the company that was firing me so I went home and called them back so they could tell me I was canned. My manager had me on speaker phone in the HR office (in case I made a threat?).

You could have heard a pin drop when they asked me if I could come in at a certain time to turn in my last company uniform and I told them I was already working somewhere else and I’d have to have my wife drop it off.

They were less than completely pleased. I think they wanted me to beg for another chance.
