Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumUtah needs to establish reasonable gun restraints
Meanwhile, the Utah Legislature continues to push for unlimited gun rights, claiming that these are "Second Amendment rights." Last session, Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clearfield, promoted a bill that would have the effect of telling individuals not to be alarmed when they see someone walking around their neighborhoods, churches, grocery stores or just about anywhere else with a visible firearm including an assault weapon.
Among the cursory reasons provided in support of the bill was the vague assertion that it would protect Second Amendment rights. But asserting a right is constitutional does not make it so. The United States Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that the Second Amendment "protects the right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of self defense." At no time has the Court expanded the Second Amendment to include a right to openly carry a firearm as a fashion accessory.

(18,318 posts)This guarantee by the U.S. Constitution fulfills the federal obligation to protect the Second. Individual states may regulate the method of carry; open, concealed or both. It cannot bar both. This was Utah's decision, so live with it.
In Texas, the law protects concealed carry, not open (except for shooting range/hunting field transfer).

(4,286 posts)This is wrong in many ways. The ignorance is so profound that it would take several paragraphs to refute it.
But since you haven't actually stated your position, I'll ask. Is this your view? Do you have a view on the passage?

Why can't the gunowners in Utah use the same restraints as gun owners in other states? I happen to have a large gun safe. I know people that use trigger locks and cable locks. Any of these restraints should be adequate for the people of Utah.

(15,396 posts)The carry of any firearm is for personal safety people need to get over their fears of their fellow man and embrace progressive firearm rights.

It appears that Jean Hill is an obvious liar when she says the Utah legislature is pushing for unlimited gun rights. Either that or she is an idiot.

(6,801 posts)clearly they are doing something horribly wrong. They need to adopt gun laws more similar to Michigan (10), or California (14), or Illinois (13).
Although they'd be best off being more like DC (not a state but would be ranked number 1 with more than double the violent crime rates of the current winner).
