Murder not a top cause of death, a first in 45 yrs

Cross post from LBN

ATLANTA (AP) - For the first time in 45 years, homicide has fallen off the list of the nation's top causes of death.

U.S. Health officials say the murder rate fell enough in 2010 to drop it out of the top 15 causes. Criminologists have not reached a consensus about what's been driving murder rates down in recent years.

...seems that having far more guns in circulation really doesn't lead to more murders...whodathunkit?

Record low murder stats. Go figure. My guess is all of those new guns registered are mainly being "fired from the hip" by people "sitting in their easy-chairs." I think that explains both why I haven't managed to murder anyone yet and why I spend so much money on t.v.s and Spackle after I buy a new gun.

By the way - gun registration is an anomaly in the US, not the norm. In the vast majority of the country, it is not only not required but not allowed.

I've read a few posts just recently that maintain that gunners "fire from the hip" which I have tried, but it seems to be a waste of ammo, since I never can hit anything that way. And, absurdly, that we need pistol grips to make it easier to fire our weapons from our recliners. Which I haven't actually tried. My thing is more long range shooting. At the local outdoor range I like to shoot at the 600 yard steel targets. If my house was 600 yards across inside, maybe I would!! (kidding again). Anyway, I do know that not everyone has to register all of their purchases. I did, however, make a few contributions to that number last year.

Since I live in SoCal, rude toting, impassive toting, and even polite toting are out of the question, so I really never get to be in touch with my death spewing side. Well, except when I'm in my Barcalounger. (kidding again. I don't even have a barcalounger!!)

Or at least you do if your agenda involves crying for gun bans... kinda hard to float that idea with record numbers of guns in circulation and record low homicides.

Makes it sound like there are way more homocides than the actual numbers indicate. When you look at the chart, the total deaths, by cause, fall off incredibly rapidly, with the top cause, heart diseases, at almost 600K, and #15 down at 17K.

Either lazy or agenda-driven "reporting" methinks.

My point was that the article seemed to imply that homocide was a "leading cause" of death, when the truth is that it only is if you don't actually look at the stats.
