Local media said Vinogradov had gone on a five-day drinking binge after being jilted by a pharmacist at the firm. It was not clear whether she was among those shot.

From what I read, violent video games are illegal in Germany and Switzerland, yet the Swiss have low violence even though they have vibrant gun culture.
The problem isn't guns or the gun culture, the problem is kids sitting in front of the stupid TV or monitor instead of riding bikes, hiking, and learning about the real world around them.

(230 posts)1 agree with the premise, kids need to be playing kids games. parents should shoulder all the blame here not gun or game manufacturers

(26,603 posts)ought with their families hunting, shooting, competing. Shooting sports are right up there with any other social activity as a better alternative to sitting in front of a monitor (says me from my perch in front of my monitor).
But I think banning video games is as weak a solution to violence as banning guns would be; the conditions that lead someone to be unduly influenced by a VG will still be there, and will manifest regardless would be my guess...

(671 posts)According to the author of the study, the type of game - violent or non-violent - didn't seem to have a significant effect on the aggression levels of the players:

Gee, maybe the games themselves aren't responsible for aggressive tendencies. What a concept!
I agree with you that today's children don't spend enough time outside. That's not their fault, though. Too many parents trying to protect their babies by wrapping them in bubble wrap.

Biggest load of Bullshit I've read all year.
The list of "banned" video games in Germany is pretty short
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_video_games#Germany
They are also not technically "banned." A person can still order them, download them and own them. There are no penalties for owning the game, or being caught with it.

(3,291 posts)TV and video games are a waste of time and energy. I'd rather be camping, hiking, working in the garden, walking the dogs.........................
I'm not sure which was worse for the guy, the binge drinking or the electronic brain nullification.
