The Navy plans to raise the pay of sailors serving aboard ships in the coming months, one of a handful of changes aimed at filling sea jobs.
Vice Adm. Bill Moran, the chief of naval personnel, discussed the pay increase Tuesday during a gathering with the crew of the amphibious assault ship Bataan, which is pierside in Norfolk and set to deploy next month.
Nothing has been finalized, but top Navy officials have endorsed a plan to boost an incentive known as sea pay, a monthly stipend that currently ranges from $50 to $700, depending on a sailor's rank and the cumulative length of time he or she has been assigned to ship-based jobs. It probably will be raised at least 25 percent - enough to match inflation since sea pay was last increased more than a decade ago, officials said.
Enlisted sailors will get the raise before summer.
