Two warships previously based in Hampton Roads - the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima and dock landing ship Fort McHenry - arrived Sunday at their new home: Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla.

The vessels join the warship New York, an amphibious transport dock, which made the switch from Virginia to Florida late last year.

Navy officials decided to move three Norfolk-based ships to Jacksonville to boost that region's military economy and shore up the naval station, which hasn't had a large-deck ship in residence since the carrier John F. Kennedy was decommissioned in 2007.

The three ships in the amphibious ready group means the transfer of about 2,000 sailors and their families from Hampton Roads to northeast Florida.
