A MacBook Pro with a 13-inch screen featuring retina display sells for $1,350 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot exchange, where the slogan is “Core Brands Corps Value.”

The same-sized MacBook Pro, also with retina display, sells for $1,099 at Best Buy.

Despite the goal of military exchanges and commissaries providing discounted merchandise to service members, veterans and their families, many of their products actually cost more than they do at traditional retailers.

The mark-ups are not across the board. A U-T Watchdog review showed that some merchandise can be bought for less at military exchanges. But routine foods and other products stocked at San Diego exchanges often sell for more money than they do at name-brand markets.
