NAS Jax runway sinkhole forces aircraft to divert

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The huge sinkhole under the runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville is causing some concern for local pilots as a number of planes have been re-routed to other airports in the area.

The main runway at NAS Jax can still handle some planes, but heavier planes can't land there right now, and until the runway is fixed, those planes will be touching down at Cecil Airport.

The Navy has told both Cecil Airport and Herlong Airport personnel that it will take about a week to fix the runway, so planes will be re-routed until then.

Cecil Airport is just miles away with a huge amount of runway space, but one concern is that smaller planes are constantly flying out of Herlong Airport in between the two larger airports.
