PORTSMOUTH
A Pentagon review has identified Portsmouth Naval Medical Center as one of eight military health care facilities with "significantly higher than expected" rates of patients becoming sick after treatment.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel released findings Wednesday of a 90-day review of the military's health care system, which serves 9.6 million active-duty troops, their families and retirees. The review was prompted by an investigation into allegations of treatment delays at Veterans Affairs facilities.
Hagel is directing military medical officials to show within 45 days how they will improve care, patient safety and access to treatment at underachieving facilities.

The Navy hospital in Portsmouth was flagged for above-average rates of post-surgery infections each of the past two years. In fiscal year 2010-11, the hospital recorded a high rate of post-operation urinary tract infections, according to the report.
