Hogs & Horses

It's an unusual thread title, but but an apt one.

Saturday was the annual 'Hogs & Horses' event in my community to raise funds for needy veterans--and especially homeless veterans.

Hogs & Horses brings together Harley riders and equestrians to raise funds for charity. I don't know how many years this has been going on, but last year this wonderful group decided that the charity the funds raised would go to would be our local outreach to veterans. For that cause, they raised more than $9,000.

This year the group contacted our local veterans outreach chairman, Steve (who also serves as director of our local food bank), and said they wanted to support the veterans outreach program again.

Like last year, I was one of the local veterans Steve called upon to volunteer to support the event, and I was happy to help. The Harley riders and the horse riders all paid to enter 'poker runs' in which they compiled their poker hands by driving or galloping to a series of checkpoints and drawing a playing card at each one.

Prizes were awarded for the best poker hands, and there were raffles and an auction, as well as a great barbecue and live band entertainment, at the end of the ride.

I don't know the final fundraising tally yet, but I had a great day with a great bunch of folks trying to do good for needy vets in our community--and with the support of a lot of local businesses.

Hogs & Horses--who'd have thunk it? What a great bunch!
