This is my follow up to first post here.
OK, I’m back for my second post here. My first one is still visible down the page. To review the bidding:
In my first post I came on and identified myself as an old white hippie who wanted to talk here about Bernie Sanders, if possible. I agreed with some of the criticism here and elsewhere about Sanders supporters being arrogant, jumping to conclusions, etc. Anyway, I was cautioned to listen first and see what people were saying, to try to learn something. Everyone was gracious to me and made me feel welcome. In addition the support for Hillary did not seem as pervasive or strong on this forum as some polls might indicate. At least that was my take away. Finally, people seemed open to a discussion about Sanders’ candidacy. Since then, I have lurked and hopefully learned something about perspectives on this board.
I think the best thing to do is give those interested a long interview between Bernie and Katie Couric (linked at bottom). If you go to minute 27, Couric asks him about Ferguson, et al. He gives four points in response to her question. IMO, the first three points speak to “racial justice.” The fourth finally addresses “economic justice.” What I liked about his answer was it included “community policing.” I understand that can be an important element in “racial justice.” What I wanted to hear and didn’t, was anything about citizen review boards and also about Department of Justice review of systemic problems, such as in Ferguson.
Finally, almost all candidates have a set “stump” speech and if Bernie has one, I have not yet heard it. Therefore I can’t comment on whether he regularly mentions “racial justice” issues on his own initiative. I hope this serves as a point of departure for discussing his candidacy, for those interested.
