Related: About this forumShould POTUS Appoint A Black Woman To Supreme Court To Protect His Legacy?
Roland Martin talks to Dr. Avis Jones DeWeever, who says President Obama needs to pick a black woman to replace the late Justice Scalia, who died earlier this week.
Its not a stretch to say that black women across the country want to see a black woman. There is no excuse not to have a black woman on the court. I really believe they are considering a black woman. Theyve gotten the message after the last appointment. Were heading into a new election cycle and we have a President that wants to protect his legacy. If he wants to do that he needs to make sure a Democrat follows him, she said.

Or a Native American woman.

(15,369 posts)be the case. But I trust President Obama to appoint whomever he wants.

(5,644 posts)They should have at least one big thing that they really want. And, besides that, let a Republican turn down their choice, you will see pissed-off black women coming out to vote in droves, no matter who the democratic nominee is. Democrats will definitely need their support.

(5,644 posts)I've heard Kamala Harris (Half Native American, half African American), Loretta Lynch (already vetted), as well as 8 others from The Root.
Edit To Add, that some of the women on that list are too old already. I'd much prefer somebody under 50 years old, the age that Scalia was when he was first nominated.

But she is going to be senator and i prefer her there since it would be a better place to be if she wants to run for higher office someday.

(5,644 posts)and you say she it's India, LOL, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE. I'm so confused (like Vinny Barbarino?).
Harris was elected Attorney General in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.[2][3] Harris is the first female,[4] the first African-American,[5][6][7][8][9] and the first Asian-American attorney general in California.[10][11]

(31,828 posts)She has the same eyes Corey Booker does. We need more of that as leadership in the black community and less of Corny. She can also bring the empathy of the (I'm one) biracial child to the post. IE
Stop.
Wait a sec.
Let me put myself in that person's shoes.
I live in an area with far more Indian, Pakistani, South Korean, Vietnamese, etc etc immigrants than I do Latin American. She may bring an insight to the Senate having grown up around an Asian culture as a black woman. I'm 2000 miles away but I can only see how she benefits people I have in my home on a regular basis.
My empathy towards the Appalachians and Scots/Irish comes from being a descendant of that background.
