Fact check: Trump and the black vote
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2016/02/24/fact-check-trump-and-black-vote/80863480/
From the article
He lied about the black unemployment rate to his supporters:
Trump claimed African American youth is 58% unemployed. The official unemployment rate for blacks ages 16 to 19 in January was 25.2%.
He lies to white people about black people supporting him:
Trump said a recent poll showed 25% of blacks support him in a hypothetical race against Hillary Clinton. That recent poll is actually from September. Six recent polls, all taken in February, show his support ranges from 4% to 12%.
He doesnt understand the Obama effect and is low balling the number of black people that have voted Republican since the beginning of the Reagan Era;
Trump said Republican presidential candidates usually get about 4% or 5% of black support. That was the case in 2008 and 2012, when Barack Obama the nations first black president was on the ballot. But from 1980 to 2004, the Republican candidate received 8% to 12%, which is consistent with Trumps support among blacks.
Why are white people being hoodwinked by what he says? Why are they looking for affirmation from black Americans for supporting this racist piece of shit used car salesman?

(135,425 posts)happen to be white. These people are "working men" (and women--but the men are the biggest bloviators), they're "entrepreneurs"--meaning they own or are part of the small business community, they feel like those (fill in the blank with your favorite ethnic/religious minority) are "getting over" and "getting all the free stuff" and they want the free stuff for themselves, and if they can't have that, they don't want ANYONE to have the free stuff. They are terribly ignorant, the sort of people who think that wrestling is real. It is a lot like that film Idiocracy!

I am at a loss on the "record turnout" the republicans are reporting.

(56,582 posts)The causes for this are complex and multi-faceted and would require hours to explain, hours that voters don't have time to give you.
And unfortunately if you can effectively assign blame on that, as Trump does, you can get a lot of white males to support you. Hmm... now whom else does that remind me of...?

(4,035 posts)That says quite a bit. Now we are hoping that those 20% aren't 20 percent of half the voting public - after all, we hope that the majority of voters will vote for the Democratic candidate, it's still quite disturbing. Literally, they said they disapproved when asked about President Lincoln freeing the slaves in rebellious states. You can't make that sh!t up.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)We know that he's winning due to the racism in this country. He is appealing to the baser instincts of American whites. His hate and disdain for blacks and Latinos are on display and white folk--particularly white men--are eating it up. They especially (white men) believe that they are the victim. No matter how much they complain, they are more likely than black men with greater education and experience, to obtain good jobs and make more money.
The people who vote for Trump are the same ones involved in the Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) movement.

(31,827 posts)Why can't they see they only harm themselves with their racist beliefs?
Do you think - maybe . . .
They think Clinton is more of a racist than Trump so they don't want to appear to be TOO racist?

(41,984 posts)Is a version of the well know condition of admiring/loving/defending the person who controls one's environment in all ways. Trump is the commonly accepted societal example of power, in matters of race, gender, wealth. That he is also a manipulative socio-path just sets the cat in amoung the pigeons, so to speak. White voters that are Trump supporters are apparently low information voters who have been trained to vote against self interest, resulting in a kind of helplessness in decision making.
Ahem.

(41,984 posts)Its difficult to put into words really, but this voting against their own self interests, this attraction to a man who clearly is a narcissist if not a sociopath most likely has a deep psychological explanation. I wonder if it has something to do with how they are raised?

Another part of the appeal: Politicians who thump their chests a lot, if they are white, are behaving in the appropriate male manner, and are also popular.

(8,709 posts)I believe they think Trump has the balls to actually "strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger." You know, violence if he needs to. I don't think they're really looking for affirmation, just need to put it out there, because as said, Zora Neale once said, "They'll kill you and say you liked it." Just twisted convoluted super illogic as an excuse to do bodily harm.

They simply dont believe the greed of people like Trump has any impact on their daily lives.
They also believe that Trump may be willing to actually harm POC and so on, like you say, so that really appeals to them.
It appeals to others as well who wont admit it.

(8,000 posts)I have a friend who is an independent. She picks a favorite on both sides and then chooses one in the course of the GE. She is a social liberal and fiscal conservative. She isn't fond of the religion that's crept into Republican politics over the years and is pro-choice. She pays close attention to all the debates and town halls and some media coverage. She prefers Donald Trump over any of the other Republicans. She has picked Hillary as her choice for the Democrats. At some point she will choose between the two before November. She thinks Donald Trump is acting the part to get the votes he needs. He's saying what he needs to say to get attention and grab votes from the others. She likes the way he takes down the other Republicans who she has no use for. She's seen the things he's said previously and believes that he isn't nearly as conservative as he's saying he is. I think she will ultimately vote for Hillary in the GE if Trump doesn't change his stance on the issues of deportation of Latinos and Muslims, or his obvious distaste for anything other than those like himself.
Most of the other people I know who support him are GOP to the core and would vote for Hitler if he was running as a Republican. The other choices are so bad, they think Trump is refreshing.
I think he's a dangerous blowhard.
