LINCOLN — Tiani Reeves always knew that the color of her skin meant something, but before coming to college, she could always avoid grappling with what exactly it meant to be different by turning off the TV.

But last Friday, hours before the Nebraska volleyball team was to play one of its biggest matches of the year, the redshirt freshman outside hitter stepped out of her comfort zone and up to a microphone in front of a couple of hundred faces — black, white and otherwise — outside the Nebraska Student Union.

It was time to step outside the bubble. She had something to say.

“As a young black woman, I cannot hide from the realities of being black in America,” Reeves told the crowd gathered at a Black Lives Matter rally. “It is my duty as a student-athlete, as a woman of color and as a citizen to not remain silent.”
