But I've experienced otherwise. I've seen a white man, my brother's neighbor who witnessed brother's continuous police harassment, continuous beatings/brutality- at his home, and eventual false incarceration, go above the call to duty. This neighbor could have stayed quiet like the others, both black and white, or become too frustrated when things many times became overwhelming but Mr. G did not. He was with us every step of our 5-year ordeal. Me, being on the West Coast and they on the East, Mr. G filed papers that he paid for with his own money, watched the court dockets, called me with ideas, strategies, was a witness at some of the trials and didn't want a dime for his time and efforts. And I've got to say most of the cop-thugs were black, white cops there, too, of course, and one Asian-American cop during one incident.
We were lucky and couldn't have withstood the ordeal without Mr. G. We didn't know at the time that he was dealing with a son addicted to prescription drugs who, soon after my brother's release, committed suicide. He never said a word about his sorrow during those 5-years though he had many opportunities when he'd called to see how we were doing over here or just to cheer us up to look on the bright side that we always overlooked.
My husband, a so-called white man, stepped in front of a gun pulled by another white man on our nephew, O, a young black man married to his niece, at a fancy hotel while we were there for another niece's wedding. Unbelievably the asshole white dude complained to the hotel about our nephew and the hotel asked O to leave. Doubly unbelievable, one member of in-laws simply said, "It must have been O's fault" and they left it at that until we found out the next morning. Husband demanded the surveillance footage pulled. Cops were called and white dude escorted out in handcuffs. I had to restrain myself from applauding. But me, husband, O and his wife had a serious round of hi-fives that no one could miss. Triple unbelievable and shamelessly, family in-law demanded a discount from the hotel because of what they "went through because we're literally unsafe here."
A good friend of mine, met here at DU, her man chased down and restrained a white guy seriously harassing/borderline violence to ensue on a group of little black children until the cops came.
That DUer has never posted this incident. Mr. G, a widower, lives quietly alone. My husband removed himself from the selfish demands of discount from the hotel. The questioning white people are few and far between and all the world needs is one to step up to say or do something when an incident arises. But I'm afraid we'd never hear of them because they ask for no praise and get virtually no support from their own communities, as far as I know.
