What are you reading the week of August 24, 2014?

Last week I read Don Winslow's The Winter of Frankie Machine. I feel this is Winslow's best that I have read—so far.

Since then I also read Tony Hillerman's The Fallen Man.

I am reading Arnaldur Indridason's Jar City. I cannot pronounce the guy's name. But that might be due to my hillbilly nature.

What are you reading?

On the Fantastic Fiction site authors recommend books they liked for some reason or other. I have found this to be a valuable feature.

8. Do you ever listen to A Prairie Home Companion on NPR?

Anyway, back in spring of 2010 when Eyjafjallajökull was erupting, they did a hilarious sketch with the entire cast, including the musicians, discussing the volcano with each of them saying the word, Eyjafjallajökull, repeatedly throughout the sketch. It was amazing - every single one of them got the pronounciation pitch perfect! By the end of the sketch I could pronounce it, too!

You just knew they had to have rehearsed the heck out of that bit - it was an unforgettable feat of linguistic gymnastics!

Listening to one cast member after another just rattle it off like they were native Icelandic speakers.

I tried to find a link for you, but there didn't seem to be a way to do a search by specific sketch - I would need to know the exact date of the show to find it, and all I know is that it was probably either in April or May of 2010. I guess you just had to be there...

11. I get the gist of the bit. Sounds like a good one. I need a DVR for the radio.

We have gotten into the habit of DVRing Keith Olbermann's sports program every evening then watching it with our AM coffee. He makes the baseball games entertaining. Olbermann is also on a mission to force the Washington Redskins owner to change their name.

Is DVRing a word? Should be.

Found a treasure, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" bu Samuel Langhorne Clements AKA Mark Twain.

I read this many years ago and certainly not this edition. It is a Norton Critical Edition with notes and wonderful illustrations by Daniel Carter Beard. This was one of those library "discards" that I had to have. It's been on my book shelf for about a year.
