Well, they are trying to make Aunt Mae more hip and active, even in the Spiderman animated series.

Gone is the octogenarian Aunt Mae of yore.

As they are going for a much younger Spiderman, and thinking about it as a teen in High School, rather than in college, this does make sense.

It doesn't make sense to have someone who looks over 60 as an "Aunt" to a High Schooler.
