What are the best, must-read DC anthologies which would give me more background

I've never been a comic book guy. Other than Dark Night, Killing Joke, and Watchmen, I've pretty much avoided comic books growing up. But the Avengers franchise (what fun!) and newest Batman movie (so operatic in theme!) has tempted me to dive into the anthology series which have at least a tangential role to the movie franchise.

A close friend is a Marvel fan, and he's given me a list a seven "must-read" story-arcs in regards to The Avengers (I've actually finished the Civil War anthology and like most of it, problems though with dialog of its main players), but he dislikes DC. So I'm wondering what are the best, must-read DC anthologies which would give me more background on this current iteration of Batman and Wonder Woman?

I'll check in on this thread over the next few weeks. Thanks!

Along the right side, there are links to recommended reading for lots of characters, including Bruce and Diana.
