Thankfulness

What do I hold in my hands?
A fragile life, a gift from God
Not earned, just given
Not of my own doing
Amazed in my heart
That I’ve had so many years
Taken for granted
So many days
Numbered beyond my dreams
Why were they mine?

So thankful am I for what I have
A family - my wife and children
A career nearing its end
With retirement on the horizon
My home, consistent
Not exciting, but reliable
No extravagance
But practicality
Steady and linear
Pushing onward towards my goal

Gratitude must be given
I could have been born in a more fatal time
The Middle Ages
During a war
On the battle lines of death
But no, my struggles are trivial
Compared to what could have been
In a different era
In a wasteland place
Life in the primitive

It’s so hard to imagine
How lucky I am
To be here today writing this
Words flow in an instant
As I ponder tomorrow
And all that it means to me.
