2. Me too.

I can stand some authors with opinions I don't really like-for example, I'll always still enjoy Frank Miller's earlier stuff. But Card feels like kind of a betrayal - he seems too thoughtful to be a religious maniac, but I guess I was wrong.

3. Yeah, I feel the same way

Authors I'm simply not interested in notwithstanding, there's only a few I'll actively avoid for their views. Dan Simmons is actively evil as far as I'm concerned, for instance. But Card was someone who wrote a novel that I feel I came across at exactly the point in my life where I needed to come across it, only to become, well, just not a good person anymore a few years after.

I get the whole Brain Eater phenomenon with SF/F writers, but it always sort of disappointed me.

4. Card - a quack, a whack, and a hack. . .

If you really really THINK about this book - it advocates complete and total violence. JUSTIFIED, of course. But still - annihilation of the enemy.

How more Republican can you get?

Not to mention that he's a warmongiering whack job who is virulently anti-gay. He doesn't really like women very much either from what I understand. He's a self-important piece of ____ who has no respect for ANYONE.

I really liked him til I met him and heard him give a speech that was very right-wing crackpot radical.

He's also more than a bit creepy at times. Think about it - the guy having sex with the 12 year old "astrally projected" of course. The guy killing his ghost girlfriend's killer so she could have her body. And then there's Wyrms. I have totally blocked whatever it was that was so awful it made me actually throw the book in the trash (sacrilege!) - but I remember it was very very disgusting and disturbing. (And no, I do not want to be reminded of whatever it was - it must have been pretty bad for me to totally block it.)

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS MAN IN ANY WAY. EVER. No movies. No books. No used books. Nothing. Destroy everything he ever wrote because it infects people with his crackpot ideas. His "Christ complex" his misogyny, his creepy creepy views, and his right-wing dogma.

6. You might want to re-read the book.

The message one ends up getting is anything but "violence is always the answer." In fact the ending leans very heavily on the premise that even when appearing justified violence can have unanticipated side effects.

7. And the initial followups,

_Speaker for the Dead_ and _Xenocide_, have Ender spending the rest of his life trying to make up for what he, at least, perceives as his crimes.

I wish he (Card) hadn't gone off the rails. I rather liked Lost Boys and some of the Alvin Maker series, too.

that's what he wants you to think he's saying, but it's not.

And yes, i read the entire series. I read EVERYTHING he wrote until about 2002 or so.

YOU read them again and tell me he doesn't look for excuses to commit atrocities. Oh he's so "sorry" of course, but what can you do? You have to do what you have to do. No matter how violent it is.

He has a christ-complex. The man is a complete whack job.

And even if you don't agree with that - EVERYTHING he stands for is antithetical to the ideals of the Democratic Party.

(And the stuff in his other books is Very creepy. Lost Boys? Using his OWN SON in book? THAT BOOK? THAT son? iiiicck. Oh and the underage sex thing in Treasure Box - I think that was the name of the book or something like that. . . . methinks OSC is more than a few bricks short of a load.)

8. Card wasn't always like that..

I remember listening to a tape of Card's "Secular Humanist Revival" and thinking it was utterly brilliant..

Now we are engaged in a great World War, a Crusade between the Christian and the Muslim world, bomb matched by bomb, atrocity by atrocity.

5. Yeah, pretty much, which is a damn shame.

Because Ender's Game is a great sci-fi book with a very pertinent message for today. But I'm not going to give Card another damn dime.
