The groom who took part in a feel-good "Door of Hope" wedding at the U.S.-Mexico border last month turned out to be a convicted drug smuggler.

Border agents are angry that Brian Houston somehow passed a federal background check before he tied the knot with Evelia Reyes in a special ceremony in Border Field State Park in San Diego. He had been found with 43 pounds of heroin, 47 pounds of meth and 43 pounds of cocaine earlier this year, according to the Union-Tribune.

"The agents are upset, feel like they were taken advantage of, feel like they were duped," Joshua Wilson of the National Border Patrol Council Local 1613 told the newspaper. "Turns out we provided armed security for a cartel wedding."

Houston and Reyes signed official Tijuana documents making them husband and wife, and embraced between the doors of a steel border gate, according to the newspaper. The gate is opened for only an hour every year.
