First ever 2-5-6-3 triple play that had a putout at third, second and first?
The ball was clearly foul and the umpire raised his hands - then changed his mind!
Talk about asterisks!

Not that the Padres were going very far this year.

(45,984 posts)I have never seen a call that bad.
What makes it a particularly bad call is that Umpire Scott called it right to begin with, then said it was a fair ball. Even if he called it wrong, he should have stuck with his initial call and avoided the whole clusterfork.

(45,984 posts). . . win the prize. Of course, if one hadn't ruined a a perfect game and the other hadn't turned around the World Series, we wouldn't remember them. They would just be bad calls, and there has to be a few in every game.
There was once a bizarre situation in a major league game where an umpire absent-mindedly threw another ball in play while a play was in progress.
In this one, the problem was really that the umpire didn't stick to his call, right or wrong. The runners on base saw the umpire call the ball foul and stayed put. That is how the play should have ended, regardless of whether the ball was actually fair or foul. His initial call determined the immediate behavior of the players on the field.
The Padres should protest the game. If Scott had called the ball foul and then fair, the Dodgers should then be the ones protesting if runners advanced while the catcher nonchalantly picked up the ball and got it back to the pitcher.

(20,365 posts)or called foul and rolls fair, it is in play. Is that true?
To me it doesn't matter because the upm raised his hands. it could have been because he was fending off the batter who was overacting. But he did raise his hands, maybe twice.

(10,129 posts)Just to the right of the plate, before it crossed the base path into fair... hard to tell for sure though since the camera doesn't focus on it.

But I though that a ball that lands foul no matter where is a foul. And I thought that I knew the rules.

(10,129 posts)The ball can bounce all over the stadium into and out of foul territory, and if it's picked up in fair territory before passing first or third, it's a fair ball. it's only automatically foul if it passes first or third base in foul territory. (or if it dies in foul territory like some bunts and check-swings tend to do)
