Aikman: Hypocrisy of Johnson, Jones unraveled '90s Cowboys

How many more Super Bowls might the 1990s Dallas Cowboys have won if owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jimmy Johnson had put their differences/egos aside?

<snip>

The chemistry of it all began to change," Aikman reflected, thinking back to 1994. Dallas had just won its second consecutive Super Bowl, but Johnson and Jones were in a power struggle that led to Johnson's departure. Barry Switzer took over the club in '94, and the Cowboys won Super Bowl XXX under his watch a year later.

<snip>

"When I point back to those years, the thing that Jimmy would always say to us ... 'If we achieve what we want to achieve as a team, there will be enough credit to go around for everybody. And the reason we won three Super Bowls -- Emmitt, myself, Michael, Daryl Johnston, Darren Woodson, Charles Haley, go through the whole list of guys -- everybody kind of just said, 'Hey, OK, we're gonna sacrifice a little individually.'

"But the guy telling us that and the owner of the club -- they couldn't do that. And that's the disappointing thing to me that that's what was preached to us, and yet the two guys who really ran the club, they couldn't unfortunately, you know, put their differences aside for the betterment of the team."

Jon. This was obvious to even the most casual observer of the NFL in the mid 90's. madinmaryland Jun 2012 #1

You still got to know who to pick. trumad Jun 2012 #6
He also picked John Avery and Yatil Green. trotsky Jun 2012 #7
To be fair---Yatil got injured pretty bad at the beginning. trumad Jun 2012 #9
What makes me really wonder, is that Aikman is just figuring this out now. madinmaryland Jun 2012 #5

Fact of turn matter is...JJ was the wizard behind the personnel decisions for the Boys and should have been left alone.

Jerry would not let that happen so JJ said fuck off.

I still say Jimmy was one of the great talent finders of all time in the NFL.

you're bound to find more than a few gems.

Why didn't he duplicate his success with the Dolphins?

And in the two years with the Phins he picked 7 Pro-Bowlers.

He had an aging Marino to contend with and a strong desire to be on his boat in the Keys drinking Heineken.

I think Jimmy had a better-than-average eye for talent, but there's a lot more to the biz.

Avery---not good for sure.

BUT---Jason Taylor
Zach Thomas
Sam Madison
Pat Surtain

Again---his picks with the Boys were brilliant.

success also makes your competition play you better. It was certainly the 49ers mantra in the mid 90s to beat teh Cowboys at all costs. And they finally did.
